DP World India took delivery of four ship-to-shore gantry cranes that are to be installed at its International Container Transshipment Terminal, the country’s first deep-water transshipment facility, which is being built at the southeastern Port of Cochin.
The twin-lift quay cranes, manufactured by Zhenhua Port Machinery Company of Shanghai, complement 11 rubber-tired gantry cranes that the Dubai operator recently deployed at the $500-million terminal.
"This is an important milestone in the development of our new terminal at Cochin, which we plan to officially open this year. The ICTT will extend the services we offer our customers, helping them to improve efficiency and reduce their supply chain costs," said Anil Singh, vice president and managing director, Indian subcontinent.
The post-Panamax cranes are capable of lifting 65 metric tons under the spreader. The boom has an outreach of 56 meters, enabling it to handle the latest generation of container vessels with boxes stowed 22-wide on deck, the company said.
The arrival of new equipment coincided with the completion of road-rail connectivity facilities at the terminal site.
ICTT’s first phase, covering a 600-meter quay and draft of 14.5 meters, is expected to offer an annual capacity of 1 million 20-foot equivalent units compared with 250,000 TEUs at the existing port terminal.
The private operator earlier planned to open the build-operate-transfer facility on Aug. 1, but based on current indications, the launch is likely to be delayed by at least a month.
Cochin handled 290,000 TEUs in fiscal 2009-10 ended March 31, up from 261,000 TEUs the previous year. Volume for the April-June quarter increased to 84,000 TEUs from 72,000 TEUs.
