The volume petroleum products passing via the port in seven recent months fell by 4.7% year-over-year, to 8,114,600 tons, while ferrous metals were up 20.4% to 2,737,400 tons, refrigerated cargoes dropped 13%, to 1,438.400 tons. Mineral fertilizer volume jumped by 50%, to 3,437,000 tons, coal and coke throughput shrank by 18%, to 1,308,800 tons.
The Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands of the delta of the Neva river, in the Neva Bay, the eastern tip of the Gulf of Finland. The Big Port of St. Petersburg territory includes the Neva River delta and the Neva Bay, Kronstadt and dam structures. The Port of St. Petersburg has a fleet of Icebreakers providing pilotage services for ships during winter navigation. The Port Authority says there are at least 30 stevedores currently operating in the port. In 2009, there were 21.619 calls (10.786 inbound ships and 10.833 outbound) at the port and 50.4 million tons of handled cargoes.
