Helsinki port’s cargo volume grows 5 percent to 5.9 m tons

Freight traffic passing through the port of Helsinki (Finland) rose year-on-year by 5 percent for last recent months to 5.9 million tons, the Helsinki Port Authority said.

Imports increased by 7 percent to 3 million tons, exports – by 3 percent to 2.9 million tons.

In July, cargo turnover rose by 4% compared with July 2010, to 800 000 tons. Passenger traffic grew by 6% in January-July to 6 million people and by 4% in July, to 1.3 million.

In the reporting period, 174 cruise liners made calls at Port of Helsinki, 6 ships more than a year earlier, increasing the number of tourists that visited the city by 13% up to 225 000.

Port of Helsinki is a largest port in Finland. Cargo throughput of the port in 2010 grew by 12% y-o-y to 10,921,000 tons, container traffic rose 11% to 399,903 TEUs, Ro-Ro cargo shipments totaled 488,772 units (+13%).
