Vessel deliveries to reach 1.28 m TEUs in 2011
According to Alphaliner ocean carriers and charter ship owners have taken delivery of 154 ships with a combined capacity of more than 1 million 20-equivalent units since the beginning of the year, the Journal of Commerce reports.
New vessel deliveries will reach 1.28 million TEUs for the whole year with ships over 10,000 TEUs accounting for a large slice of the new arrivals, the container market analyst said. The new deliveries come as the industry faces overcapacity and weak freight demand.

Cancellations, deferrals and slippage have had a marginal impact on fleet growth with only 120,000 TEUs of deliveries scheduled for delivery in 2011 pushed back to 2012.
The biggest ships above 10,000 TEUs have all joined the Asia-Europe route but the “cascading out” of smaller vessels to other routes has reduced the impact of increased capacity on the trade. There is a growing trend to deploy ships of 7,000-10,000 TEUs on north-south routes, with the Far East-Middle East and Far East-South America being the main recipients.
