Iceberg designs 60 MW icebreaker
St. Petersburg-based Central Design Bureau "Iceberg" is finalizing the design of a universal icebreaker of capacity of 60 MW, Atomflot said.
The next generation icebreaker will replace outdated icebreakers of "Arctic" class (the Arctic and the Siberia will be decommissioned very soon), Atomflot Deputy General Director for Fleet Operations Andrei Smirnov said.
The new icebreaker features extended life span (up to 40 years), enhanced ice breaking capabilities (to break 3m thick ice). The vessel incorporates deep-draft and shallow-draft characteristics, normally two different types of draft for icebreakers. This will enable her to operate in different environments, as well along the Northern Sea Route as in estuarial areas.
