Singapore, India mull terminal in Andamans
In an attempt to ease congestion at the world's second busiest port at Singapore, the island nation is in talks with India's Shipping Ministry for setting up a container handling terminal at the Andaman and Nicobar islands, reported Asia Pulse.
"The Shipping Ministry is mulling setting up a port on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis in the South of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and has discussed this proposal with the Singapore Port Authority," according to a source close to the development.
The proposal was discussed during a visit of Singapore Port Authority officials to India last month, when they met with officials of the Ministry of Shipping.
"This is mainly with the purpose of easing traffic at the Singapore Port. The proposed port would serve Colombo, Singapore, Bangladesh and Indonesia," the source said.
