Activists threaten to close US west coast port

Activists and their allies in the US labour movement are planning a campaign of direct action that is expected to shut down the Californian port of Oakland, the fifth-busiest container facility in the US, ifw-net reports.
Occupy Oakland organisers said that in addition to closing the port, they planned to rally in force outside banks, corporations, schools and libraries to “show the world what is possible”.
Local branches of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have expressed support for the protest and said their members would not cross a “serious community picket line with a serious number of people with goals that don’t conflict with labour”.
