Managing Director of the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography (INIO) Vahid Chegini said the ocean-liner which is to be dubbed "Persian Gulf" would be launched into Iranian southern waters by the end of 2012.
He said the ocean-liner which is 50 meters long is under construction.
Reports say the project, including designing, building, equipping the vessel, and procuring the spare parts, is estimated to cost about $14 million.
Oceanographic research vessels conduct research on biological, chemical and physical characteristics of water, the atmosphere and the climate.
Also regarding Iran's presence in South Pole, he said, "India and Brazil possess respectively four and three research stations in South Pole. Iran can be present in South Pole through joining the Antarctic Treaty which includes 40 members."
He expressed hope Iran could found a research station in South Pole with some $110,000,000 fund.
