Felixstowe hits weekly box traffic record

Felixstowe’s container rail traffic hit a record 11,019 containers in a single week, as the UK’s largest box port reaps the benefits of a three-year investment in tracks, cranes and terminals, the Journal of Commerce reports.

The port said last week’s record, which beat the previous record of 10,893 units set in May 2011, is equivalent to 16,846 20-foot equivalent units.

“Approximately one in every three of all containers that came through the port last week arrived or departed by rail,” said David Gledhill, CEO of Hutchison Ports [UK], the owner of Felixstowe.

The port currently operates two open-access, common-user rail terminals and will build a third terminal in 2012, which will double its rail capacity  Felixstowe, which handled around 3.3 million TEUs in 2010, said it handles more rail services to more inland destinations than any other UK port.
