Philippines’ Tacloban port to be upgraded

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has started rehabilitating the Port of Tacloban, reported BusinessWorld.

"This is the first major improvement for Tacloban port since its construction before the second World War. There were only minor repairs in the 1980s," PPA Tacloban port manager Dominador Licayan said.

PPA, which is financing the rehabilitation works estimated to cost US$8.69 million, expects to complete the project in early-2013.

The city's wharf now has 7,756 sq m of loading area for 10- to 40-footer container cargoes.

"The facility has deteriorated these past years since the port was not designed for loading of cargoes in containers and hauling by big trucks," Licayan said.

The port normally serves four cargo ships daily with an average of 500,000 gross registered tonnes.

The work involves concrete-paving of nearly 8,000 sq m and installing interlocking concrete block pavements totaling 2,975 sq m. Pavements will be elevated up to 3m for more convenient cargo loading and unloading.

"We will also construct a containment area, including installation of steel pipes, sheet piles and walling, rock works, fill materials, and tie rods," Licayan said.

Pavements have also been adjusted in roll-on, roll-off ports of Calbayog City in Samar; Naval in Biliran, San Ricardo in Southern Leyte; as well as in Maripipi and Kawayan in Biliran. All these ports are operated by PPA Tacloban.
