Ocean carriers' schedule reliability rises to 63 percent

The amount of container ships arriving on time in third quarter rose to 63 percent, and Maersk Line had the best schedule reliability among major carriers, Drewry Maritime Research said in its latest Schedule Reliability Insight report.

Container ships arrived on schedule at ports 55 percent of the time in the second quarter.
Drewry’s quarterly report measured on-time performance of 3,821 ship arrivals at selected ports. The report considers a ship on time when it meets its estimated time of arrival or gets into port a day early.

Thirteen of the top 20 container lines equaled or surpassed the 63 percent industry average, and all but three major carriers improved their scores from the previous quarter.
Maersk retained its position as the most reliable of the top 20 carriers measured by vessel fleet size across all the trades covered by Drewry. APL took second place, while its New World Alliance partner Hyundai Merchant Marine was third.

In September, Maersk announced a guaranteed-schedule service between a handful of ports in Asia and Europe.

“The latest Schedule Reliability Insight results do suggest that carriers are committed to improving service integrity, particularly as the improvement occurred during a period of faltering demand and rates when the motivation to keep to schedule could have wavered,” said Simon Heaney, editor of Drewry’s Schedule Reliability Insight.

During the third quarter Drewry transitioned to a new methodology that allowed for some vessels to be tracked by date and time. The rationale for this shift was to avoid punishing services with berthing slots scheduled for late in the day.

The report measured 754 voyages measured using the new date and time method in, with all others measured by day only. Drewry said the proportion of vessels monitored by the hour will increase as more carriers provide the required ETA data.
