Tanzania plans to more than double petroleum handling capacity

Tanzania plans to more than double its handling capacity of petroleum products to 100,000 metric tons in May, when it opens a new offshore-anchored facility for tankers, according to the country's Ports Authority, Bloomberg reports. The so-called Single Point Mooring facility for tankers loading or offloading fluid products will be able to "handle vessels carrying up to 100,000 tons of petroleum products," Franklin Mziray, communications manager of Tanzania Ports Authority said today in a phone interview from the capital Dar es Salaam.
The Port of Dar es Salaam's shore facility can handle 40,000 tons now, according to Mziray. "We have spent $62 million on the offshore facility, which is currently being assembled in China," Mziray said.
Tanzania consumes about 1.54 million cubic meters of petroleum products each year, according to the country's Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority website.
The Port of Dar es Salaam handles about 95 percent of Tanzania's international trade and serves markets such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, according to the port's website.
