The volume of transit cargo hauled on the Northern Sea Route (the Northeast Passage) totaled more than 820,000 tons as of 18 November 2011 versus 111,000 tons a year earlier, Atomflot statistics said. Year-to-date, there have been 34 transits of cargo ships (4 voyages in 2010).
This year the NSR saw 2 million tons of coastal trade cargo. Soon, the nuclear-powered icebreaker “Russia” will be escorting on the Arctic route the tanker Ventspils from Arkhangelsk to an Asian port.
