Freight traffic via Northern Sea Route soars to 820,000 tons

The volume of transit cargo hauled on the Northern Sea Route (the Northeast Passage) totaled more than 820,000 tons as of 18 November 2011 versus 111,000 tons a year earlier, Atomflot statistics said. Year-to-date, there have been 34 transits of cargo ships (4 voyages in 2010).

This year the NSR saw 2 million tons of coastal trade cargo. Soon, the nuclear-powered icebreaker “Russia” will be escorting on the Arctic route the tanker Ventspils from Arkhangelsk to an Asian port.
