The Project 949A submarine arrived at Zvezdochka dockyard in October 2006. Over the period the shipbuilding firm has completed a full cycle of ship repair, replaced a turbine, eliminated leaks in steam generator, etc. This will extend by 3 years the service life of the submarine systems.
The Voronezh also completed acceptance sea trials and on November 23, 2011 set sail to her permanent naval base. The certificate of acceptance will be signed between Zvezdochka Shipyard and the Russian Navy this December.
The Project 949A K-119 nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine was laid down at Sevmash on Feb. 25, 1986, launched on Dec. 16, 1988 and commissioned on Dec. 29, 1989. In 1993, the ship was named "Voronezh."
Ship’s main specifications: Displacement (submerged) - 19400 tons, length - 155 m, beam - 18.2 m, mean draft - 9.2 m, speed: 15 knots (surfaced) and 32 knots (submerged). The submarine is armed with two 650mm and four 533mm torpedo tubes. Main armament: 24 cruise missiles P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) with 750 kilograms (1,700 lb) HE or 500 kt nuclear warheads. The crew - 107.
Zvezdochka Shipyard based in Severodvinsk is a diversified shipbuilding enterprise. It has two covered slipways with 7 shipbuilding sites which are designed for overhaul and construction of vessels with a launching weight of up to 18,000 tons. The firm is majority owned by Northern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center, part of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation.
