Maersk Line merges ICON service with daily Asia-europe network

Maersk Line, the world’s largest shipping line, has announced that it is to merge its ICON service with the Asia-Europe ‘Daily Maersk’ network, Port Technology reports.

By enhancing the ICON service the Danish shipper hopes to rationalize and further optimize the network between the Far East and the Indian Subcontinent to North Europe, as well as establish a more balanced supply/demand scenario on the key trade route.

The network changes to the service, which currently operates seven Panamax vessels, will become effective from February next year.

The enhancement of the ICON service will include a dedicated feeder link between Chittagong and Tanjung Pelelas, a weekly Chennai feeder via Colombo, and a direct call from the AE7 service in Colombo westbound, improving the transit time from Colombo to North Europe by 2-3 days.

Today the ICON service consists of seven Panmax vessels.

Exports from N. Europe to Indian Subcontinent, including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, will be covered on the AE1 service which will feature direct call in Colombo.

The service update will not have any impact on the Daily Maersk network and transportation times will remain unchanged, Maersk said in a statement.
