MISC to sell 16 containerships

Malaysia-based MISC plans to sell 16 owned containerships within about six months as the company exits the box trade business, Seatrade Asia online reports. Any containerships not sold within the period will be kept in “a short re-activation mode” until December 2012, including manning and maintenance, according to MISC in a reply to Bloomberg.

The company will also explore the possibilities of sub-leasing chartered-in vessels or return them to owners early.

MISC, controlled by Malaysia's state-owned oil firm Petroliam Nasional, unveiled last week it will exit the container shipping operations after the sector accumulated $789m of losses in three years.

MISC also owns or leases 29 LNG vessels, 83 petroleum tankers and 28 chemical tankers.
