China's Shanghai port opened the new year with 2.62m teu of containers handled in January, a figure lower compared to both year-on-year and month-on-month volumes.
Shanghai moved 3.3% less containers last month compared to 2.71m teu recorded in January 2012. Last month's figure was also 1.5% lower compared to 2.66m teu posted in December 2011, according to statistics from Shanghai International Port (Group).
In 2011, Shanghai remained the world's largest container port with container throughput of 31.74m teu, edging out its nearest rival Singapore with 29.9m teu.
