BNCT claim that the terminal is “the most advanced in the whole of Korea”, with two shipping lines already signed up to call at the facility.
The construction of the terminal began in January 2008 and was completed in December 2011.
BNCT is equipped with four large berths with a depth ranging from 16 to 17 meters, enabling the terminal to handle the world’s largest ocean going containerships.
The terminal is also the first in Asia to make use of automated stacking cranes supported by low height straddle carriers for quay to stack transfer, according to World Cargo News.
The facility has a total of eight Ship-to-Shore cranes in operation, with another four on order, and 20 straddle carriers. An additional ten straddle carriers will be purchased in tdue course, according to BNCT.
BNCT has a current capacity of 1.7 million TEU, which will be increased to 2.8 million TEU.
BNCT is located in Busan, South Korea’s second largest city after Seoul, and provides direct access to the neighboring Port of Busan.
