NC's Wilmington traffic volume rises 11.2 percent

Container throughput at the Port of Wilmington jumped 11.2 percent last year from the previous year, as the North Carolina port handled more imports and exports of agricultural products, the Journal of Commerce reported.

Container traffic hit 287,467 20-foot equivalent units, while bulk and breakbulk volumes increased 16 percent year-over-year at Wilmington and 2 percent at Morehead City, the state’s other major port. The North Carolina State Ports Authority said throughput at Morehead City’s results were boosted by the return of woodchip operations, which had been absent nearly a decade.

The woodchip operation currently exports soft woodchips to Turkey for the manufacture of medium density fiberboard. Since July, Morehead City handled more than 133,000 tons of woodchip exports.
