Two Rosmorport’s icebreakers release Panama-flag gas carrier trapped in Azov Sea

The icebreakers Kapitan Chudinov and Kapitan Demidov have cleared a 6-mile passage escorting the Gas Monarch, which was trapped yesterday in the Sea of Azov, Azov Ice Operations HQ told PortNews.

On February 16, the Panama-flag gas carrier tried break through the ice from the port of Temryuk without icebreaker assistance and stuck in the ice. The 1.65dwt Gas Monarch was built in 1985, her length is 64 m.

Another Rosmorport owned icebreaker Kapitan Moshkin is escorting cargo ships: the A. Lebed, the Vilesh River, the Nikolai Kuznetsov, the Palmali Discovery, the Fariah Ismailhanov, the Nasiba Zeynalova to the ports of Rostov-on-Don and Azov. The icebreaker Kapitan Krutov is now guiding the Vostochny to open water.

As of now, there are 32 cargo ships in the Sea of Azov, 20 of them – to depart and 12 – to call at the regional ports, 22 vessels are waiting for icebreaking assistance, including 8 operational and two stricken ships.
