China ports traffic volume down 1 percent in January

Container throughput at the ports of China in January 2012 fell 1% from the same period a year before, to 737.33 million tons, the Ministry of Transport of China said.


Monthly traffic volume at the country’s seaports rose 1.8% to 527.45 mln tons, while throughput of river ports fell 7.4% to 209.87 million tons.


Containerized cargo traffic inched by 0.2% to 13.63 million TEUs, with a 0.5-percent gain to 12.3 million TEUs at seaports, and a 2.6% decline in river ports throughput to 1.32 million TEUs.

 

In particular, the Shanghai Port container traffic dropped 3.6% to 2.61 million TEUs in January, Ningbo-Zhoushan throughput grew by 11.3% to 1.41 million TEUs, Qingdao increased by 8.2% to 1.21 million TEUs.


In 2011, total container throughput at the country’s ports amounted to about 9 billion tons.
