Big Port St. Pb throughput dips 7 percent to 3.98 mln tons

Cargo traffic at Big Port St. Petersburg in January 2012 dropped 7% from a year earlier, to 3,982,200 tons, the Sea Port Authority “Big Port St. Petersburg" said.


Container throughput at the port’s terminal grew by 3.5% to 170,901 TEUs.


In the reporting period, handling of mineral fertilizers decreased by 19 percent year-over-year to 326,700 tons. Shipments of ferrous metals rose 32% to 450,800 tons, the volume of non-ferrous metals totaled 115,100 (+27%). Refrigerated cargo volumes sank by 63% to 106,100 tons, exports of scrap metal fell 9% to 77,500 tons, of oil products – by 27% to 750,900 tons.


Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands of the delta of the Neva river, in the Neva Bay, the eastern tip of the Gulf of Finland. The Big Port St. Petersburg area encompasses the Neva River delta and the Neva Bay, Kronstadt and dam structures. During winter seasons smooth marine traffic within the port is ensured by Rosmorport’s icebreakers. There are 30 stevedore companies operating at the port. In 2011, cargo throughput at the port rose year-over-year by 3% to 59,989,300 tons.
