Finnlines to launch new Wallhamn-Ust-Luga service, as of late March 2012

Finnlines will expand its presence in Russia further and enhances the country’s maritime links with the Scandinavian market. Finnlines announced its biweekly new service from Wallhamn on the SW coast in Sweden to the Russian port of Ust-Luga. The service will deploy one ro-ro vessel, the company's press release said.

This service, which reaffirms the company’s strong commitment to the promising Russian market, represents a new link between the Scandinavian countries and Russia.

In addition to an ideal location for unitized traffics, Wallhamn is also a growing port for handling of new cars. Many ocean-going vessels are calling at Wallhamn where goods with its final destination Russia can easily be transhipped to Ust-Luga with Finnlines.

Finnlines will launch the new service at the end of March with one modern ro-ro vessel, targeted towards the automotive industry as well as at the truck, trailer and container business. The service departs from Wallhamn every other Tuesday and arrives at the new terminal port of Ust-Luga on Thursday.

Finnlines President/CEO Uwe Bakosch underlines that this new connection to Russia is enhancing the successful strategy of having connected Russia already from Bilbao, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hull, Aarhus and Lübeck by introducing a further connection from Wallhamn, Sweden to Russia. This modern new network towards our clients for Russia is well supported by our four newbuildings with a single capacity of 3,245 lanemetres and hoistable decks for 600 cars. The final two newbuildings, forming a complete series of totally six, will be delivered end of 2012.

Furthermore he highlighted “that we feel being particularly well-suited to deliver a series of services that meets the needs of the very demanding trade to Russia. The network of European ports into Russia will allow to lift all trade synergies associated to that strategy having the vital benefit of synergies with the Grimaldi Group, which allows us to offer worldwide connections to our Russian customers, linking our growing network of short-sea services in the Baltic and beyond to the deep-sea services in West-Africa, North- and South America through Antwerp and Wallhamn.”
