World's largest bulk freighter sets sail for Brazil from China

The world's largest deadweight tonnage (DWT) bulk freighter built in China has set sail for Brazil, the shipbuilder announced Thursday, Xinhua reports.

The huge ore carrier (VLOC) "GEMMA" is 330 meters long and 57 meters wide. It weighs 151,915 tonnes and is able to carry 313,000 tonnes of deadweight, a spokesman with the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. said.

It took the company 15 months to build the largest bulk freighter in the world, the spokesman said.

Before it set sail for Brazil on Feb. 16, it was filled with 5,300 tonnes of fuel, 200 tonnes of light diesel oil, 1,012 barrels of lubricating oil and other supplies, he said.

"Its construction indicates that Dalian's shipbuilding capability has reached the top level in the world," he added.

Greece, Japan and China are three leading builders of bulk carriers in the world.
