Vanino dockers call off work-to-rule

Port Vanino longshoremen ceased a work-to-rule action (an “Italian” strike) announced by the local union of dockworkers on February 1, 2012. A meeting of Vanino and Russian Dockers’ Union with the authorities of JSC Vanino Commercial Sea Port is scheduled for February 28, the Amur Press reports. The longshoremen are demanding pay hike.

Port Vanino is the year-round open port and the largest transport hub in the Khabarovsk Territory. It is the terminus of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM). During winter navigation season, Rosmorport’s and local icebreakers assist shipping in the harbor.

JSC Vanino Commercial Sea Port (Port Vanino) is the major operator of Port of Vanino (Khabarovsk Territory). The port is a gateway for trade flows between Russia and Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, USA and other countries of Asia Pacific Region. Vanino also handles imports shipped to the northern regions of Russia. Port Vanino’s quay line total length is about 2.5-km with three specialized cargo handling facilities. In 2010 throughput of Port Vanino rose to about 6 million tons (+0.2% yoy). Russian Government holds a 55-percent (73.33% of common stock) stake in Port Vanino, RusAl owns 20% of shares of the company.
