Port of Oulu traffic volume slides 2 percent to 1.1 mln tons
Cargo throughput at the Finland’s Port of Oulu in January-April, 2012 dropped 2% compared with the same period in 2011, to 1,144,013 tons, the Port Authority said.
The volume of domestic imports shrank by 12.3% to 206,051 tons, the imports of goods from abroad fell 2.6%, to 472,702 tons.
Exports rose 4% to 465,260 tons, including 267,366 tons of paper (+5.4%). The volume of exported chemicals and other bulk goods remained flat on last year’s figure. Lumber exports soared twofold and amounted to 55,408 tons.
Container exports leaped by 47% to 13,498 TEUs. SECU containers (Stora Enso Cargo Unit) were down 28.4% to 3,922 units.
The Port of Oulu (Oulun Satama) is one of the leading ports for forest industry products and unitized cargo on the Gulf of Bothnia. The harbors in Oritkari, Nuottasaari, Vihreäsaari and Toppila have 500 - 600 ship calls each year. The port specializes in handling exported paper, timber, imported petroleum products and raw materials for the local timber industry. In 2011, cargo throughput at the Port of Oulu soared to its record high ever, 3,567,202 tons.
