Rena containers recovery passes 800
A total of 815 of the 1,368 containers have been retrieved from the stricken containership Rena on Mount Mauganui's Astrolabe Reef, Seatrade Asia online reports. Neil Lloyd, operations manager at Braemar Howells, confirmed numbers were boosted this week with 21 containers brought to port on Monday, and a further eight on Tuesday.
Braemar Howells has been working on the recovery of distressed cargoes from Rena, the ocean and beaches.
“The good weather and calm sea conditions had enabled the good progress, and also favoured continuing shoreline debris recovery operations. Two tonnes of debris, comprising small pieces of timber, were removed from Matakana Island yesterday [Tuesday],” Braemar Howells said.
“With most of the bigger debris removed from Coromandel and Bay of Plenty shorelines the cleanup operations were not focused mainly on bead recovery.”
