Odessa port traffic volume flat, at 11.3 million tons

Cargo handling at SE Odessa Commercial Sea Port in January-May 2012 slightly exceeded the level of the same five-month period in 2011 and totaled 11.3 million tons, with more than a twofold surge in container traffic to 172,140 TEUs, the state-owned company said.

In May, cargo throughput at the port reached 2.3 million tons, a 15.4-percent gain from a year earlier. Handling of dry cargo increased by 14.2% to 1.5 million tons. Grain exports jumped by 2.2 times from last year’s figure, to 540,800 tons. Shipments of ferrous metals rose 13.2% to 260,900 tons.

Monthly container volume grew 20.2% to 43,997 TEUs. Oil products volume was up 28.2% to 739,000 tons.

State-owned Odessa Commercial Sea Port is a largest port in the Black Sea-Azov basin. The port encompasses 14 ha, featuring 9km-long quay line with 54 berths. The port’s passenger terminal can accommodate 300m-long vessels. Port of Odessa capacity is 14 million tons of dry bulk cargo and the same volume of oil products a year. In 2011, cargo traffic rose 3.7% year-on-year, to 25 mln tons. Container througput was up 29% to 453,700 TEUs.
