Korea's container cargo to top record 2 mln mark for first time in May
The volume of container cargo handled at Korea's seaports is likely to top 2 million cargo containers for the first time in May backed by a spike in trans-shipment cargo, Arirang reports.
The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said Wednesday that the volume recorded for last month was estimated to have reached 2 million-16-thousand twenty-foot equivalent units.
That's up 8 percent from a year earlier and it marks the largest volume ever on a monthly basis.
The ministry added that the amount of trans-shipments that passed through Korea en route to other destinations jumped 20 percent from a year ago to some 805-thousand TEUs.
And the amount of cargo being shipped into or out of Korea rose 2 percent from a year earlier to about 1.2 million TEUs last month.
