RWG commences construction of Maasvlakte II container terminal
Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG), the DP World-led consortium, has started construction of the first phase of its Maasvlakte II container terminal in Rotterdam, Port Technology reports.
The 108 hectare site with a quay wall of 1,150 metres, a quayside depth of 20 metres and a 550-metre quay has already been built by the Port of Rotterdam.
The terminal, which will open in the second half of 2014, will be a fully automated facility, consisting of a dedicated rail and barge terminal, with an initial handling capacity of 2.35 million TEU.
DP World will be responsible for the daily operational management of RWG.
“Today, a milestone has been reached by beginning on-site construction,” said RWG Chairman, Peter Jongepier.
“After a few years of preparing the reclamation, I am delighted that work has now begun. We are confident that this innovative terminal will make a major contribution to the further development of Rotterdam as the main port for North-West Europe from the moment it is opened.”
The facility will be supplied with a total of 14 ZPMC quay cranes, while horizontal transport of the containers from the quayside to the stack will be carried out by 59 computer-controlled Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs).
The stack at the terminal will be equipped with 32 conventional automatic stacking cranes and 16 automatic cantilever cranes. Both the AGVs and the stacking and cantilever cranes are being supplied by Gottwald.
The terminal surface, underground infrastructure and the power supply are being constructed by the BAVO Gateway consortium, a joint venture between the Royal BAM Group and VolkerWessels.
RWG is a joint venture between container shipping lines APL, MOL, HMM and CMA-CGM, and the Dubai-based termianl opeartor DP World.
