Global container fleet hits 16mln TEU: Alphaliner
The global containership fleet has hit 16m teu in capacity although the rate of growth has slowed, Seatrade Asia online reports. Analyst Alphaliner said the global containership fleet had passed the 16m teu mark last week with 772,000 teu delivered so far in the first six months of the year and a further 30,000 teu this week.
“However, it has taken the fleet twelve months to climb from 15m to 16m teu. By comparison, it took only ten months to climb from 14m to 15m teu and nine months to climb from 13m to 14m teu,” Alphaliner said in its weekly newsletter.
The slower rate of growth was partly explained by increased scrapping with 163,000 teu in capacity sent to the breakers yard in the first half of 2012, compared to 107,000 teu in the whole of 2011.
