Rotterdam’s Botlek Tank Terminal to undergo major expansion

The Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port, has agreed a contract with a construction consortium for the expansion of the Botlek Tank Terminal (BTT) site by approximately 5 hectares, Pport Technology reports.

The land reclamation project will see the area currently occupied by the oil-storage facility more than double in size and capacity.

When the 21-month construction works are completed, BTT will see its total storage capacity increase from 200,000 m3 to approximately 750,000 m3. The expansion will be carried in two phases.

Upon the handing over of the site to BTT in mid-2014, the Rotterdam terminal will be able to build a liquid bulk tank storage capacity of 550,000 m3.

The environmental license for the expansion was issued by the regional environmental authority DCMR last month.

The new build plans also include a train loading station and a connection to the European pipeline system for aviation fuel.

Rotterdam Port’s Botlek Tank Terminal, built on the former site of the Maas grain silo, officially started operations in April. The terminal is a joint venture between HES Beheer NV and Noble Group Ltd.
