Environmental watchdog to probe into oil spill near Novorossiysk

Regional Prosecutor's Office initiated administrative proceedings against JSC Chernomortransneft for oil spill in the Black Sea near Novorossiysk, the law enforcement agency said.

The case was submitted to the Southern Region’s Rosprirodnadzor department for the administrative investigation.

According to authorities, oily wastes spilled into the waters of Tsemess Bay on July 7 in Novorossiysk, which leaked from two open reservoirs of Sheskharis depot, during heavy rainfall and floods that hit the Russian southern region. As a result, the contaminated area totaled almost 300 square meters.

Currently, oil containment booms have been placed in the body of contaminated area. As of July 8 about 95% of polluted water has been cleansed and the next day, the sleek has been completely removed. The oil spill response team has collected 82 cbm of oil debris.

Now experts are making assessment of the damage. The law enforcement agency is conducting investigation into the case.
