PSA develops automation technologies

Port operator PSA Singapore Terminals is developing automated guided vehicle (AGV) prototypes for 24 hours operation of future container terminals to transport containers between the quay and the container yard without human drivers, Seatrade Asia online reports.

Apart from automated container port systems, the innovations comprise optimisation techniques and green port technologies.

“Land optimisation, manpower productivity and the environment are all important considerations in our Singapore operations. Our investment in automation and green technologies would enable us to overcome these challenges and further enhance the skill sets of port employees,” said Tan Puay Hin, regional ceo Southeast Asia, PSA International.

PSA has awarded the tender to Singapore Technologies Kinetics and Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Company, to each develop two AGV prototypes with energy efficient hybrid technology, while Cargotec Corporation has been contracted for a common navigation system that will drive the vehicle units in the port.

A series of pilot trials will be conducted over the next two years under local operational conditions, according to PSA.
