A solemn foundation stone laying ceremony for the new port of Sabetta in Russia’s Yamal was held today, July 20, 2012. A commemorative capsule was laid in the foundation of the future port, the PortNews correspondent reports from the ceremony.
The port project is implemented in line with the Comprehensive Plan approved by the Russian government for the development of liquefied natural gas production on the Yamal Peninsula.
The Port of Sabetta will contribute to strengthening Russia position as a world leader in the development of the Arctic. Its creation will form the conditions necessary for the exploration and development of rich oil and gas deposits on the Yamal Peninsula and the Gulf of Ob, ensure year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route and the development of the icebreaker fleet of Russia.
Construction of the port is carried out on the principles of public-private partnership. The state will be responsible for dredging, construction of a canal and the Vessel Traffic Management and Information Systems. JSC Yamal LNG (the main shareholder of Novatek) will construct surface facilities of port infrastructure.
