The volume of transit traffic along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) transported by merchant vessels escorted by icebreakers is gradually increasing, and this year could exceed one million tons, Atomflot said on Friday.
For five months of last year, 34 transit cargo vessels led by icebreakers had passed the Northeast Passage, and transported 820,000 tons of different cargoes.
The potential freight flow capacity of the NSR is estimated at 50 million tons of cargo a year
