Far Eastern Shipping Company (FESCO) owned icebreaker Krasin today, June 23, 2012 came to Cape Dezhnev in the Bering Sea to escort first cargo ship M/V Vasiliy Burkhanov to the polar Pevek port, RIA Novosti reported.
The Krasin departed home port of Vladivostok on July 14 and headed to the eastern sector of the Arctic, where the icebreaker will be escorting cargo ships to the Polar ports. The Arctic navigation opens in mid-June and lasts until early November. The shipping lane is the main transport artery from the Far East southern ports to Chukotka. The cargo ships deliver to the region food, clothing, footwear, construction materials, machinery, coal and petroleum products. The M/V Vasiliy Burkhanov transports building materials, food and mining equipment to businesses and residents of the Far North.
