MAN Diesel & Turbo completes test bed trials of new boxship engine

MAN Diesel & Turbo has successfully completed test bed trials in South Korea of new engine designed for containerships, Seatrade Asia online reports.

The engine maker said test bed trials on its first super-long-stroke, 90  cm bore Mk 9 engine had been completed at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Engine & Machinery Division. The largest two-stroke engine ever designed by MAN Diesel & Turbo, the engine will deliver a torque of 8.5m Nm at 84 rpm and has a total output of 69,720 kW.

“The S90ME-C9.2 covers the new trend in container shipping demanding smaller bore, super-long-stroke engines with lower propeller speeds,” said MAN Diesel & Turbo.

The engine built by HHI will be installed on a containership newbuilding being built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).
