Chinese shipbuilder Mingde Heavy Industries is set to move into LNG carrier construction with the signing of a cooperation agreement with Cambridge Energy Group, Seatrade Asia online reports.
Under an agreement signed last week the two aim to develop and construct 140,000 cu m LNG carriers and smaller 10,000 – 20,000 cu m LNG carriers as well as FLNG units with an annual output of 2m tonnes.
“For this LNG Carriers project, we have recruited experts on LNG Carriers in China and created a R&D team. We will carry out extensive cooperation with Cambridge Energy in technical area and trust that we could benefit a lot in core technology for LNG Carriers,” said Ji Fenghua, the chairman of Mingde.
Mingde would become only the second yard in China to build an LNG carrier.
