CNOOC Engineering (CNOOEC) lost one of its tugs in the aftermath of the weekend's Typhoon Vicente. The company said its 15,000 bhp anchor handling tug HYSY 699 lost power near Hong Kong's eastern coast and sank while a rescue team was towing it to shelter, Seatrade Asia online reports.
It added that all crew were able to abandon ship in time.
The Hong Kong Observatory raised the alert on Typhoon Vicente on Friday to Signal 10 signifying an upgrade from a tropical storm to a severe typhoon.
The HYSY 699 is CNOOEC's biggest and newest anchor handler and was acquired for $43 million in 2008. It's only other tug is an older 6,000 bhp tug. The company said it is filing an insurance claim for the loss of the vessel.
