MISC Berhad (MISC) has said there is a "minor slick" emitting from Bunga Alpinia following a fire aboard the vessel on July 26, 2012 after it was reportedly struck by lightening while alongside the Petronas Chemicals Methanol terminal in Labuan, East Malaysia, Ship & Bunker reports.
MISC said the slick is "currently largely being contained around the vessel by anti pollution containment booms."
Authorities and industry experts engaged by MISC were said to have increased their efforts to contain the spill to ensure the protection of the environment and surrounding communities.
Additional booms and spill containment equipment is also said to be available on site to manage any leakage should the need arise.
The fire onboard the Bunga Alpinia was reported to have been extinguished and is being monitored while the vessel cools.
MISC also confirmed that it has recovered the bodies of the 5 crew now confirmed to have perished in the incident and have identified 3 as Ordinary Seaman Mohd Hanafi Bin Kalil, Senior Pumpman Zahari Bin Hassim, and Deck Cadet, Muhammad Nazri Bin Khamsani.
The remaining 24 crew members "are ashore, are safe and unharmed."
