BEGINNING from January 1, CMA CGM will impose a US$23 per TEU surcharge on container shipping across the Gulf of Aden due to the potential risk from piracy in the region.
The piracy related surcharge will not be adjusted in the short or the long term rate agreements that have already been finalised.
The American Shipper reported a source in the Marseilles-based container shipping giant that the surcharge would cover the high insurance and other security costs of transiting through the prime shipping trade route.
Maintaining a high vessel speed while crossing the Gulf of Aden and moving in convoys guarded by the coalition warships are some of the security measures that have been adopted.
