Jiangmen Zhongxin Shipbreaking first to achieve ship recycling convention compliance
Jiangmen Zhongxin Shipbreaking & Steel has been awarded a statement of compliance (SOC) for the yet to be adopted IMO shiprecycling convention by ClassNK, Seatrade Asia online reports.
The Chinese yard is the first to receive the accreditation for the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (Hong Kong Convention). ClassNK awarded the SOC after a thorough review of the Ship Recycling Facility Plan, developed by Zhongxin with the assistance of Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
The SOC was officially presented to Zhongxin’s director Liang by ClassNK executive vice president Toshitomo Matsui prior to ClassNK’s Ship Recycling Seminar held in Tokyo on 13 December.
Adopted 15 May 2009 the Hong Kong Convention will come into force 24 months after ratification by 15 States, representing 40% of world merchant shipping by gross tonnage.
