Russian seaports’ cargo volumes rise 5.9 percent
Shipments of cargo through the Russian seaports in January-November increased by 5.9% year-on-year to 518.5 million tons, the Association of Seaports report said.
The eleven-month volume of dry bulk cargo grew 8.8%s reaching 231.9 million tons. The increase was driven mainly by a 13.6-percent gain (81.6 mln tons) in coal exports, an 8.8-percent growth (39.2 mln mt) in containerized cargoes. Grain exports reached 22.8 mln mt. Shipments of ferrous metals totaled 23.9 million tons (+7.9%), ferries cargo traffic rose 8.2% to 7.6 mln mt, handling of non-ferrous metals rose 5.1% to 3.9 million tons. Scrap metal volume climbed 0.2% to 3.5 tons.
Mineral fertilizer volume dropped by 16.6% y-o-y to 9.5m tons, shipments of iron ore decreased by 8.5% to 6.6 million tons. Handling of unitized cargo fell 3.8% to 5.3m tons, refrigerated cargo volume was down 15.8% to 3.5m tons.
Shipments of liquid bulk through the nation’s ports totaled 286.6 million tons, which represents a 3.7% gain from a year earlier, including 180.0 million tons of crude exports (+1.1%) and 104.0 million tons of petroleum products (+7.5%).
In the reporting period the Russian ports saw a 9.7-percent growth in exports compared to January-November 2011, to 409.4 million tons. Import cargo volume was flat on last year’s figure at 41.2 million tons. Transshipment of transit cargo declined 14.3% to 39.2 mln tons, short sea traffic volume fell 2.7% to 28.7 million tons on the back of crude exports decline, while shipments of dry bulk cargo carried by coastal vessels rose 6.2% year-on-year to 17.4 million tons.
In the reporting period, stevedoring companies of the Arctic basin handled 34.6 million tons of cargoes, which represent a 9.0% decline from January-November 2011. Shipments of dry bulk cargo through the terminals of the Russian northern region rose 8.4% to 22.0 million tons. The port of Arkhangelsk throughput rose 20.0% to 4.9 mln tons, cargo traffic at Dudinka port climbed 3.5% to 1 million tons. Cargo handling at the port of Murmansk fell 10.0% to 21.2 mln tons, Vitino port’s throughput shrank by 12.2% to 3.4 mln tons, exports volume passing through Varandey terminal slumped by 1.6 times, to 2.3m tons, Kandalaksha port handled 700,000 tons (-18.7%).
In January-November, the Baltic Sea-based Russian ports moved 190.8 million tons of different cargoes, up 12.4% from last year’s numbers, including 69.4 million tons of dry bulk cargo (+5.7%), 121.4 million tons of liquid bulk (+16.6%). Cargo throughput at Primorsk terminal rose 1.5% to 69.4 million tons. Port of Ust-Luga traffic soared 2.1 times to 42.4 million tons, thanks to coal exports growth and commissioning of new oil terminals. Port of Vyborg cargo volumes rose 35.1% year-on-year. Cargo traffic at Big Port St. Petersburg fell 3.1% to 53.7 million tons, cargo shipments through the port of Kaliningrad dropped 6.9% to 11.5 million tons, Port of Vysotsk cargo throughput was flat on last year’s figure, at 12.4 million tons.
Handling of exports / imports at the ports of Azov-Black Sea basin in the reporting period totaled 161.3 million tons (+2.5%). Dry bulk cargo shipments rose 12.7% to 64.2 million tons, while liquid bulk traffic was down 3.3% to 97.1 million tons. Freight flows passing through the Port of Novorossiysk totaled 107.7 mln tons, up 1.6% from a year earlier. The port of Taman cargo volumes surged 2.2 times to 2.0 mln tons thanks to commissioning of the new grain terminal. Shipments of cargo from the port of Rostov-on-Don increased by 12.9% to 10.4 million tons. Cargo handling at the port of Kavkaz increased by 11.8% to 8.7 million tons. Port of Azov eleven-month throughput rose 12.1% to 4.8 million tons. Cargo traffic at the port of Tuapse shrank by 7.7% to 16.3 tons, at the port of Temryuk – by 5.6% to 2.1 million tons.
The Caspian Sea-based Russian ports transshipped 9.5 million tons, a 0.9-percent gain year-on-year, including dry bulk cargo - 4.5 million tons (-8.6%), liquid bulk – 5.0 million tons (+11.1%). Freight traffic at the port of Astrakhan shrank by 23.9% to 3.1 million tons. The port of Makhachkala cargo volumes rose 16.1% to 5.7 million tons. Handling of loads at the port of Olya increased by 1.6 times to 700,000 tons.
In January-November, the ports of the Far Eastern basin handled 122.3 million tons, a 6.4% growth year-on-year. Shipments of dry bulk cargo through the regional ports rose 10.0% to 71.8 million tons, liquid bulk traffic was up 1.6% to 50.5 million tons. Vostochny port handled 38.6 million tons of cargo (+9.6%). Port Vanino throughput rose 4.3% to 18.2 million tons. Stevedore companies of the Port of Nakhodka transshipped 15.5 mln tons (+12.6%). The Port of Vladivostok saw a 12.6-percent growth to 12.2 mln tons. The port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky moved 2.3 mln tons of different cargoes (+6.3%). Shakhtersk port handled 1.6 mln tons (+10.2%) and Magadan port – 1.3 mln tons (+14.4%). Cargo shipments via the port of De Kastri dropped by 8.8% to 6.8 million tons, throughput of the port of Kholmsk totaled 1.7 mln tons (-12.8%).
