GE Shipping orders EEDI compliant MR tanker newbuild
Mumbai, India based Great Eastern Shipping Company Limited (GE Shipping) says it has placed an order for a newbuild fuel efficient Medium Range (MR) Product Tanker that will be designed in compliance with Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements, Ship & Bunker reports.
According to the press release, the approximately 50,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) vessel will incorporate "new eco design features" resulting in "greater fuel efficiency."
To be built at STX (Dalian) Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in China, GE Shipping said it expected the tanker to join its fleet in the forth quarter of its 2015 financial year.
Earlier this month the CEO of Italy's d'Amico International Shipping S.A., Marco Fiori, said that so called eco tankers were "set to be the future of our industry."
EEDI will require 10% greater efficiency for ships delivered between 2015 and 2019, 20% between 2020 and 2024, and 30% from 2025 onwards, but Vice-President of the European Commission Siim Kallas and EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard have said it will not be enough to ensure shipping emissions are reduced fast enough.
