Tuticorin to get 2nd container terminal

The Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, has laid the foundation stone for the second container terminal at Tuticorin.
The terminal, at a cost of Rs 312 crore, will create an additional capacity of 6 lakh TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). The facility would help promote transport of goods across the country, he said on the occasion. Under the National Maritime Programme, Rs 55,000 crore for port development and Rs.45,000 crore for the shipping industry respectively have been earmarked.
In Tamil Nadu, 3,261 km have been converted into four lane roads, he said speaking to reporters later.
