Freight volumes on Estonian Railways fell by 11% in February

According to initial calculations, the cargo transport volumes on Estonian Railways (Eesti Raudtee) amounted to 2.05 million tonnes in February 2009 – 11% less than during the same month last year, writes EPL Online/LETA.

Freight volumes on Estonian Railways are affected by the critical state in the global economy, including noticeable decline in production, consumption and in demand for raw materials. The enterprise commented that railway transport volumes have this year fallen by up to 30% in the year-on-year comparison in Finland, Lithuania and Latvia.

Transportation of the principal category of freight goods – oil and oil products – reached 1.5 million tonnes in February, falling by 7.6% in comparison to last year. Transportation of oil shale also fell in February, amounting to 0.2 million tonnes.

A total of 4.28 million tonnes of goods were transported on railways in the first two months – 12.9% less than during the same period of time last year.
