This is the fourth year in the No 1 spot for the Yangtze, which streaks across Central China from Chongqing to Shanghai, said Xinhua.
By the end of last year, aggregate throughput of ports along the Yangtze came to 1.01 billion tonnes, 13 times that of 1978 volume. Throughput of port of Nanjing, Suzhou and Nantong surpassed 100 million tonnes. Cabotage sailings on the river carried 34.1 million tonnes, 17 times that of the 1978 figure.
In 2005, Yangtze recorded 795 million tonnes in cargo movement, 60 per cent more than Mississippi's and 130 per cent more than Rhine.
