Eastern China city Chongqing has seen the throughput of its ports dropping due to the world economic crisis. In January, its Jiulongpo and Cuntan port area together handled 23,600 TEU, down 28.8 per cent over the same month a year ago and 15.4 per cent comparing to December. In this total, foreign trade cargoes amounted to 14,000 TEU, 30.6 per cent less year on year and 11.4 per cent less comparing to December, reports Xinhua.
The two port areas are also offering much less sailing presently than before. The Jiulongpo port area now offers 17 sailings a week while the Cuntan port area offers 15 sailings a week, 50 per cent less comparing to the average level recorded in last year.
Container throughput of the two port areas is expected to fall further in February and March.
