LUKoil subsidiary rejects report of oil leak in northwest Russia

A subsidiary of Russia's oil producer LUKoil on Wedensday dismissed reports that oil had leaked from its pipeline in the northwestern Russian republic of Komi, RIA Novosti reports.

The region's environmental prosecutors and investigators said they have registered eight reservoirs with about 2,000 cu m of oil near the pipeline. Following the reports, Greenpeace Russia has sent a letter to the Russian Prosecutor General's Office demanding an investigation.

"No emergency oil leak took place in the area, no threat to the environment occurred," LUKoil-Komi said in a statement.

The company admitted that a small amount of oil-contaminated liquid was released into the environment on February 22, but said it happened during the scheduled removal of paraffin from the pipeline.

"The oil-polluted liquid was released into special reservoirs as scheduled. The amount of liquid was below 650 cu m," it said.
